Is there a smoking car on this train?
By andrewinscotland

OK, so I quit smoking, right? And? So what? It’s hard and things suck and I can grumble and whine or I can just get on with it.

And that’s fine, life changes, we move on, and so I keep trying to get on with things, to make life bigger, and I am, but it’s an imaginary life I’m leading. Which is fine, if the illusion is honest, but it isn’t.

Seven Weeks and The Lost Soothie

28 12 2008

<<Just a quick note, Heather decided that the blog needed updating and since I haven’t been doing it on a regular basis she is now a legalized contributor!! –David>>

It is hard to believe it has been seven weeks since we arrived home with our little bundles of joy. Over the time I have been writing stories to share in my head. This morning I thought I would take the time to jot one down while the children are taking their morning naps.

Look around your home and decide what is the most precious thing you own not including family and pets. Hands down for me is the Pacifier/Soothie. soothieGoing into motherhood I wasn’t going to use one of these things, but Mom betted that I only lasted less than 24 hours at home with Sam. Judge me not you mothers with strong feelings about how to take care of infants. With twins all of the “suppose to” statements are thrown out and one just does the best they can.

I have become obsessive about these little green things. It all started when we bought four of them, two green and two blue. It wasn’t until we got home that Dee pointed out that the blue ones are the next stage up, so they are a little harder. You would think this wouldn’t matter, but it does. You can’t fool the kids, they know. This left us with only two soothies for two kids…meaning we couldn’t loose one. Seems like an easy task, but oh no not in our family. Sam can be sucking away just content as can be, suddenly reach up and fling the soothie out of his mouth and throw it across the room. The scary part is the little suckers roll. Dee is constantly surprised where they end up. We just spent a fussy two days looking for a missing soothie that was all the way under the bed hiding behind a support board.

A couple of weeks ago, the kids and I were in Greenville staying with Mimi and Papa Jim. At one of the 3 am feedings, Sam managed to loose both soothies in 5 minutes. Luckily Jim was able to find them on the other side of the room under the suitcase. Don’t think I’m singling Sam out. Just last week, Ella and I were going downstairs to make the 3 am bottles and she spit her soothie out from the top of the stairs. It went all the way downstairs and rolled into the back hallway. During the last four weeks, Sam has been notorious for pulling Ella’s soothie out of her mouth, especially after he has managed to loose his. It got so bad we finally had to switch what side of the bassinet he was laying on so his free hand couldn’t reach her.

I should be thankful that neither kid will accept the soothie when it isn’t what they want. It is really cute when the soothie falls out during sleep and Ella works her mouth and tongue for a couple of minutes trying to find it before she lets out a frustrated cry. Thankfully, they are starting to suck on their fists and fingers, and Sam can hold his soothie in his mouth with his hand when he wants to. Hopefully another couple of weeks will find us less dependent on these green things, but until then…

Peeking Through the Trees, Part 2

25 11 2008

Well, Monday morning sunrise led into Tuesday morning sunrise. I know the twins have some secret language that only they understand. Sometime yesterday they apparently colluded to have a growth spurt last night, in sync. After the 12 am feeding Heather went to bed and I stayed up to pull the “First Shift” so Heather could get a bit of sleep between feedings. I was back and forth between the bed and the twins every 5 minutes or so. Great. Once this dance had gone on for 30 minutes or so I decided to take the kids downstairs so Heather could sleep peacefully. She’s been such a trooper thus far and definitely deserved a break for at least one night.

About an hour in, neither twin was consolable. Both rooting each time I picked them up. Ok. Half a bottle each then. That solved the issue until the next official feeding at 3 am. They slept fitfully off and on until then. After that feeding, which takes around an hour to feed both kids, Sam had no intention of going back to sleep. We had to do laps (me walking, Sam along for the ride) of the butcher block (it’s 18 square feet) in the kitchen. Many laps later he was finally asleep. That must have been 5ish. I didn’t see any point in trying to get any sleep at that point since the next feeding was at 6.

Heather came downstairs just as I was waking Sam back up in the middle of his feeding. Asked if I had gotten any sleep. No. Definitely growth spurts. Said I brought them downstairs so she could sleep the night. She said that made her feel guilty. I told her not to worry. No guilt was necessary. She’d been working so hard with the kids and she absolutely deserved it. Not all gifts can be bought at a store. She’s downstairs now with the young’uns making sure they don’t get their days and nights mixed up. Probably singing a song or two.

Dad is flying in late this afternoon. He hasn’t seen the twins in person yet, and I can’t wait!!

But I will. I need a bit of sleep. Night all!

Ok, one more thing. Thanks to all those friends before me who say “It will get better” “sleep is overrated”, etc. I hate to say it, but it hasn’t really been that bad for me. One of my pain management medications for my back is also prescribed as an anti-depressant. I’m on even keel. :) Which is one reason why I really want to help Heather in anyway I can. She’s been without most kinds of medications for over nine months. The least I can do is share the benefits of my meds to better her day.

Ok, really, good night. Err… Morning.

Peeking Through the Trees

24 11 2008

Sitting in bed feeding the twins.
Watching the sun rise over the Holy City.
Sounds of garbage men in the street.
Occasional coos from my daughter.
The wife softly snoring at my side.

It’s Monday morning.

Heather and I want to thank everyone for their kind words of congratulations and encouragement. I’m sorry I have not responded to your emails, but rest assured they have been read and GREATLY appreciated.

This has been one of the longest 7 days of our lives. If you don’t have a clue, I’ll tell you what’s up. I’ve been waiting quite a while to write this one.

On Wednesday, November 5th, my beautiful wife of 13 years gave birth by c-section to a 6 pound 6 ounce red-headed baby boy. AND a 5 pound 12 ounce baby girl. As a good friend of mine said, “Two MORE blood suckas running around…” The day started off very relaxed. Heather and I had been up the night before watching election results and stayed up a bit too long. We were supposed to be at the hospital on the 5th at 7:30am to start an induction. I think we strolled in to Labor and Delivery about 8:30am. Never made it to the check-in desk. The first nurse we encountered knew EXACTLY who we were. I’m guessing they had been warned. Heather is notorious for being late and being late to the birth of her own children certainly was no exception.
