Remember that house we bought in ’47?

My Grandparents were in town last weekend, and after dinner they started telling this story. I found it absolutely amazing! I can’t imagine the bookmaker odds this would actually happen. Especially with a 60+ year intermission.

The next day I tried to tell the story, but found there was no way I could do it justice. So, here’s the first guest post on the new site!!

From my Grandmother:

About two months ago some new neighbors moved into the apartment across from ours. As is the habit with new residents we exchange information about where each of us had lived before we moved into the retirement community. We told them we had earlier lived in Greenville. They said they, too, had lived in Greenville.

We asked them what area of Greenville they had lived. Scott said they had lived on the east side of town on a short street off Laurens Road. We told him we had lived in that area too and asked if he remembered the name of the street. He said “Skyland Drive”. We exclaimed that was the same street we had lived on before we had moved to E. North Street.

We said, “do you remember the number of the house on Skyland Drive?” He said, “No, he didn’t remember the number but it had a drainage ditch beside the house and it was located opposite a small park which divided the street.” That’s the house we lived in”, we said. “No way”, he replied.
To further confirm it was the same house, we told him there was a little house in the back and he said — “yeh, there was a little house in the back. I had some chickens and that was my chicken house!” We told him it was our children’s playhouse. “You’re kidding”, he said.

We dug out some pictures of the house and little house in the back. He was amazed! “That’s it!, he said — that’s the house!! I can’t believe it!” With further exchange, we found out he had vacated or left the house in 1946, and we purchased it in early 1947. When he vacated the house he had left town so the realtor handled the buying/selling and we never met the person from whom we were buying.

We continue to marvel that our first house (which we lived in for fifteen years) had been occupied sixty plus years ago by our new neighbors with whom we will be spending our last days. Ironic, isn’t it?
