Childhood Memories

19 07 2008

Today was a very slow day at the old hardware store. We got in a shipment from Radio Flyer on Friday and to make the day go by I assembled each and every wagon and tricycle we received. About the third wagon in I remembered something from my childhood that brought a smile to my face.

Just about all the kids in the neighborhood had wagons or Big Wheels. My brother and I had a Radio Flyer wagon. The great thing about our neighborhood was that one of the streets was a giant (to us ‘lil kids) hill. We would drag out the wagons & big wheels and see who could fly down the hill the fastest and the furthest. Without crashing. I know of a few cats who still do this, albeit wearing full motorcycle leather & helmets.

Down the Dragon.

At night.

“Driving” a wagon down a hill takes a light touch. Too much steering input will flip you in a heartbeat. Too little and you’ll crash into someone’s car. I don’t remember ever hitting a car but I do remember rolling the damn thing.

So I’m assembling these memory creators in the back of the store and I had a thought. What if Radio Flyer made adult versions of all their classic toys? Would anyone buy them? If Charleston had any damn hills worth a crap I’d be first in line.

What I’d really like would be a larger version of a tricycle. I have vague memories of riding one as a little kid, but nothing that really stands out. Yeah I know you can get trike versions of motorcycles and there are large tricycles that are build from bicycles, but what I want is an embiggened version of the Radio Flyer Tricycle. Take a picture of the original and Scale that puppy up in photoshop. That’s what I’d want. Can you picture it?

My question to you readers (all three of ya) is this: If you could have an adult size/version of any toy that you had as a kid, what would it be? And no, Hot Wheels Ferraris don’t count. That would be to easy.

Here’s some music from Sesame Street to get you in the mood…
